Recently, the US Senate designated August as National Women’s Suffrage Month, honoring the centennial of the passing of the 19th Amendment.  According to Wikipedia, the first province in the world to award and continuously maintain women’s suffrage was Wyoming Territory in 1869.  The first sovereign nation to grant women’s suffrage was Norway in 1913, followed by Canada (1917), Britain and Germany (1918), Austria and the Netherlands (1919) and the US (1920).  With Saudi Arabia granting voting rights to women in 2015, women can now vote in every country that has elections.

August has some pretty bizarre holidays.  The monthly holidays include National Catfish Month, National Golf Month and National Eye Exam Month.  Here are some other holidays during the month:

  • August 2 is National Ice Cream Sandwich Day
  • August 4 is National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day
  • August 8 is “Sneak Some Zucchini onto Your Neighbor’s Porch Day” (!)
  • August 9 is Book Lover’s Day.  I have compiled a list of my favorite books I have read over the last few years.  If you want me to send you the list, email me at judy@skillbites.net.
  • August 13 is Left Hander’s Day.  My husband, brother and sister are all lefties.  Lefties make up about 10% of the population.
  • August 15 is Relaxation Day – I like that one!
  • August 22 is Be an Angel Day
  • August 27 is Global Forgiveness Day
  • August 31 is National Eat Outside Day

These are all courtesy of the Holiday Insights website, holidayinsights.com.  Here’s hoping that your August is filled with joyful holidays.

  1. New Authors

SkillBites recently published the first book of Dr. Richard Krathen, a dermatologist who wrote Dermatology Essentials for Medical Assistants.  This easy-reading guide will allow any medical assistant to hit the ground running in a new office.  It’s also useful for anyone who may want to know about a skin condition.  The book contains information on basic dermatology terms, including pictures of the most common skin conditions.  It also includes information on clinic flow, procedure set up and break down, and everything else a medical assistant would need to know to walk in and contribute to the medical team on day one.

SkillBites is soon to be publishing the first book of Dr. David Monheit, a psychiatrist and martial artist who has written The Fire Within The Ice:  Psychoanalysis and Martial Arts as Examples of Western and Eastern Concepts of the Mind.  This is a unique book in the field of cross-cultural studies and philosophy of mind. The author provides a detailed discussion about the practice and philosophy of psychoanalysis and martial arts in the broader context of the historical development of Western and Eastern concepts of the mind. In examining the dualities of psychoanalysis and the martial arts, West and East, and the psychological and the physiological, the readers will obtain a better understanding of the fundamental unity of our existence and relationship to the universe.

Next month, the SkillBites Show will be on Monday, September 21 at 1 pm ET.  My guest will be Arline Warwick, founder of Find Corporate Sponsors.  Arline helps businesses, entrepreneurs and nonprofits find large sums of money to build their businesses. She teaches people how to partner with large corporations and get paid handsomely to do so without having to pay the money back. After learning from her own experiences and years of research, Arline now guides businesses through a system that reveals the easiest approach to finding the best partnerships for their individualized needs.  As Arline says, “the money is there but you’re not finding it because you don’t know where to look.”  In this episode, Arline will share tips on finding and getting corporate sponsorships.

.

Last month, we heard from Mark Coudray, of Coudray Growth Technologies.  Mark is a serial entrepreneur with almost 5 decades of widely varied experience. He is recognized internationally as a premier thought leader and strategist who delivers proven net profit and gross margin gains, even in highly commoditized price-driven markets. Mark shared several strategies for moving from survival mode to thriving during the Covid crisis.

  1. Tip of the Month: Increase the visibility of your book

Key to your book’s success is making people aware that your book is available for purchase.  One tool for helping you do that is called NetGalley.  NetGalley is an easy-to-use online service that provides a connection point to make books available to reviewers, media, librarians, booksellers, bloggers and educators to read books and provide reviews for the authors.

Members of the NetGalley community can request advance reader copies so they can read and recommend the books.  The requests go to the publisher (or independent author, if the author has joined NetGalley) of the requested book, and the publisher generally approves the requests from members who have a history of providing feedback for the books they’ve accessed.  It’s a great way to build buzz, and receive feedback and reviews.

NetGalley has two main plans:  a 3 month listing and a 6 month listing.  If you would like SkillBites to make your book available on NetGalley, give me a call at 610-783-4519 or email me at judy@skillbites.net.
