September ‘20 Newsletter

It’s hard to believe that the year is almost three quarters gone, and what a strange year it has been!  With just over 3 months to go, what can you do to finish strong, and prepare for a better 2021?  Here are a few suggestions:

  • Take a course or read a book or attend a virtual conference on a topic that will help you improve, either personally or professionally.  One of my colleagues, Gloria Manchester, is hosting a virtual summit, LEAP to Prosperity, at no cost, from September 23 – 27.  To sign up, go to https://createathrivinglifestory.com/leapsummit .

  • Work on getting a book done to enhance your credibility and generate more leads for your business.  If you want any help with that, let me know.

  • Sign up for virtual networking events.  There are many out there that are free to attend.  You’ll expand your network and are likely to meet people who you would never have met otherwise, and who might refer others to you.  Another colleague, Gerald Haman, runs a weekly “speed networking” zoom call.  You can find Gerald on LinkedIn and seek to join his call.

  • Contact all of your current and former clients, and all of your prospects to find out how they are doing and what challenges they are facing.  Offer whatever assistance you can.  You’ve probably heard the expression, “People don’t care what you know until they know that you care”.  Show that you genuinely care, and people will be more likely to use your services or refer you to others.

Taking positive steps such as these will help position you for a better finish of 2020 and a stronger start to 2021.

  1. Tip of the Month: The One Page Book

When I started SkillBites, my concept was to help business owners gain the many benefits of being a published author by providing an easy and convenient publishing platform to get their books done.  I encouraged people to write short books, as they are quicker to write and quicker for the target reader to read.  I had heard that the average person gets through only 18 pages of a non-fiction book.  Interestingly, I also learned that TED Talks are limited to a maximum of 18 minutes, because that is the average person’s attention span.  So why write a 300+ page book?

Recently, one of my authors, Joe Tumolo, introduced me to the concept of the one page book.  He sent me an example.  Joe provides consulting services to non-profits in setting up legacy programs, among other things.  His “one page book” was a pdf file that included an attractive front cover, title page, content page, page outlining the various services he offers and an offer for a free consultation, and back cover.  The one content page consisted entirely of the following:

Up to 90% of your donor’s

wealth is in their assets not

their wallets or checkbooks.

– The End

The book certainly gets people’s attention, and it makes a strong point.  According to Joe, he has gotten great feedback from it.  The verdict is still out as to whether the one page book is an effective marketing tool.  I think like any other marketing tool, this can be useful if used properly, and in conjunction with appropriate follow-up.  Joe could include on the page outlining his services a line about his books Simplify, which covers how to create a legacy campaign, and Go See People, which more generally covers fundraising, thereby enhancing his credibility.

If you want to create a one page book and would like some assistance, let me know.  SkillBites can create an attractive cover for you and help put the book together for you.
