    Introduction

Why meditate? Deep states of relaxation and awareness, the hallmark of meditation, can be a pathway to enlightenment, an access channel to creativity, and can produce clear vision. Meditation can be a way of stimulating the natural healing process; it can help mine the depths of the unconscious mind, or align you with source and the experience of grace.

The benefits of meditation are well-documented. In a study published in the January 30, 2011, issue of Psychiatry Research: Neuroimaging, a team led by Harvard-affiliated researchers reported measurable changes in brain regions of the meditators associated with memory, sense of self, empathy, and stress after they participated in an eight week mindfulness-meditation program.

    Meditation through the Ages

Meditation can be traced back to 3,000 B.C. The use of chanting and eye-fixation exercises, in early rituals in India and China, was thought to summon the assistance of the gods. We see similar beliefs and invocations used by the Celts and Christians as well as Greeks and Romans up until the eighteenth century.

In 1893, in Chicago, the World Parliament of Religions gathered at the World Columbian Exposition and it was there that Swami Vivekananda introduced Americans to Zen Buddhism. It underscored the notion that from the meditative experience, which included developing concentrated focus and clearing of the mind, the practitioner could have access to the source of all religious understanding and wisdom.
